Project Natal

Update From E3 2009 Microsft new Prouduct Project Natal

No Strings (or Controllers) Attached.

Introducing Project Natal, a revolutionary new way to play: no controller required. See a ball? Kick it, hit it, trap it or catch it. If you know how to move your hands, shake your hips or speak you and your friends can jump into the fun -- the only experience needed is life experience.

Project Natal (pronounced "na-tal" (IPA: [naˈtal])) is the code name for a "controller-free gaming and entertainment experience" by Microsoft for the Xbox 360 video game platform. Based on an add-on peripheral for the Xbox 360 console, Project Natal enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller through a natural user interface using gestures, spoken commands,[1] or presented objects and images. The project is aimed at broadening the Xbox 360's audience beyond its typically hardcore base.[2] Project Natal was first announced on June 1, 2009 at E3 2009. Microsoft said that over a thousand software development kits began shipping to game developers that same day.[2]

Though Microsoft has not officially announced any price or release date projections for Project Natal,[2][3] it is expected to be released in late 2010.[4][5][6][7][8] Project Natal will reportedly also serve as the basis for a "new" Xbox 360.[fn 1]

(Sensor)

The Project Natal sensor[1] is an approximately 9-inch (23 cm) wide horizontal bar[15] connected to a small circular base with a ball joint pivot, and is designed to be positioned lengthwise above or below the video display. The device features an "RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone, and custom processor running proprietary software",[1] which provides full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition, and voice recognition capabilities. The Project Natal sensor's microphone array enables the Xbox 360 to conduct acoustic source localization and ambient noise suppression, allowing for things such as headset-free party chat over Xbox Live.[1]

The depth sensor consists of an infrared projector combined with a monochrome CMOS sensor, and allows the Project Natal sensor to see in 3D under any ambient light conditions.[1][16] The sensing range of the depth sensor is adjustable, with the Project Natal software capable of automatically calibrating the sensor based on gameplay and the player's physical environment, such as the presence of couches.[17]

Project Natal is reportedly based on software technology developed internally by Microsoft and hardware intellectual property acquired from time-of-flight camera developer 3DV Systems.[5][11][18][19][20][21] Before agreeing to sell all its assets in March 2009,[22] 3DV had been preparing its own depth-sensing webcam controller, known as the ZCam.[23][fn 2]

Described by Microsoft personnel as the primary innovation of Project Natal,[11][21][26] the software technology enables advanced gesture recognition, facial recognition, and voice recognition.[19] The skeletal mapping technology shown at E3 2009 was capable of simultaneously tracking up to four users for motion analysis,[11][16][19][27] with a feature extraction of 48 interest points on a human body at a frame rate of 30 hertz.[17][27] Depending on the person's distance from the sensor, Project Natal is capable of tracking models that can identify individual fingers.[16][19]

(Technology demos)

Three technical demos were shown to showcase Project Natal when it was revealed at Microsoft's E3 2009 Media Briefing:[28]

* Ricochet – a Breakout-like game in which the entire body is used to bounce balls at blocks.
* Paint Party – where the player can make throwing motions to splash or draw with paint onto a wall. He/she can choose colors using speech recognition, and can pose to make stencils.
* Milo and Kate – a game in development by Lionhead Studios[29] in which the player interacts with a young child (Milo or Milly, selected by the user at the start) and his/her dog Kate by performing real-life actions. In an interview after the demonstration, Lionhead founder Peter Molyneux confirmed that the demo was in fact the long-running Dmitri Project. Interaction was demonstrated only with Milo at this event.[30]

A demo based on Burnout Paradise has also been shown outside of Microsoft's media briefing, which allows the player to use an invisible steering wheel to control the vehicle.

Code name

The name Project Natal follows in Microsoft's tradition of using cities as code names.[1] Microsoft director Alex Kipman, who incubated the project,[27] chose to name it after the Brazilian city Natal as a tribute to his country of origin,[1] and because the word natal means "of or relating to birth", reflecting Microsoft's view of the project as "the birth of the next-generation of home entertainment".[11]

"This is a pivotal moment that will carry with it a wave of change, the ripples of which will reach far beyond video games"

STEVEN SPIELBERG

"For us, this E3 is about breaking down barriers – between generations, between games and entertainment, and most importantly, between dreamers and the future – in a way only Xbox 360 can."

Sony PSP and Nintendo DS

We pit the two handhelds against each other in a fight to the death. Or expired battery, whichever comes first.

March 28, 2005 - Now that both the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP are on store shelves in North America, it's finally time to pit them head-to-head. We've had some time to play with the American version of the PSP for a few weeks now, and we've of course had a DS around these parts for some time. Join us as we break down the systems part-by-part, feature-by-feature and determine which has the better screen(s), controls, battery life and more.

One thing to note is that this feature is meant to be as much of a timeless head-to-head as possible, and because of that the current library of games for each system wasn't really considered. Part of the reason is that both systems are relatively new (especially the PSP), and saying that one trumps the other in terms of software at this point would be foolish, especially with E3 coming up in less than two months.

With that said, on with the show...

Processing Power

This one is obviously in the PSP's favor. While the Nintendo DS has a very capable 3D chip, able to render the likes of Super Mario 64, it's no contest that the PSP has more raw power than the DS. Even the launch games (which didn't exactly have a ton of time to be developed) approach the graphical abilities of the PlayStation 2. Comparing a PS2 to the N64 is like night and day, and that's pretty much the same comparison that can be made here. Really, this one is no contest.

Winner:PSP

(Screens)

With the pure processing power being the first, the screens of the two systems are really the second major battlefield that the two systems are waging battle on. The PSP's screen is no-doubt a beautiful thing, though the Nintendo DS has two of them, one of them being a touch screen. So which setup is better?

It's hard to say. Each display type has its pros and cons. The PSP's screen is bright, vibrant and exceptionally clear. The viewing angle is magnificent; you can view the on-screen action from most any angle and still see a very good image. It also touts a widescreen aspect ratio and a relatively large size.

The PSP's screen isn't perfect, however. Its refresh rate isn't the greatest thing ever, rather it's far from it. While a screen full of motion can fool the eye plenty well enough, objects that move quickly against a slower or still background can bring the refresh rate problems to the forefront. Reds are especially susceptible to this. It's also a pain to keep clean, as is the system as a whole.

The Nintendo DS' strengths are in its dual-screen setup and its bottom touch screen. The ability to control on-screen actions with the touch of a stylus makes it possible for developers to create entirely different games than what's possible on other systems with conventional control systems. As well, having two separate view areas means that some of the action, information or what have you can be pushed off to the second view, making for a potentially cleaner interactive view.

When compared to the PSP, however, the Nintendo DS' screen quality falls short. The viewing angles aren't nearly as nice, and the colors and overall clarity just don't compare. It does sport a better refresh rate though, saving it from some of the blurring problems that the PSP suffers from.

So again, which setup is better? Really, this one is too close to call for either side. The PSP really wins out in quality, but the DS wins in screen interactivity and the potential for unique designs.

Winner: Tie

(Battery Life)

When it comes down to battery life, the Nintendo DS is the clear winner here. The PSP needs plenty of juice to feed all that power and it drinks it a-plenty. The interesting part is that it's almost entirely variable; a game that pushes the system to its max and uses the UMD drive plenty will kill the battery faster than you can charge it. On the other hand, a simple puzzle game that rarely needs to access the drive would likely let the system run about as long as the same game on the Nintendo DS. But since most the games on the system will skew more towards the graphically-intensive variety, this one goes to the Nintendo DS.

Winner: Nintendo DS

(Controls)

Both systems feature the same main controller layout with a D-Pad, four main action buttons on the face of the unit and two triggers. The main differential is the PSP's analog stick vs. the DS' touch screen.

This is another hard one to call as this one obviously comes down to titles on an individual basis. If we were talking about cross-platform type games, like sports games or the like, then the PSP's analog stick is the clear winner; it just works much better as a generalized analog input device. But the DS' strength is in its ability to allow for unique input schemes, like in such games as Wario Ware Touched!

Concerning the other controls, each system has its strengths. The DS has the better set of triggers. The PSP's triggers are sort of clunky and not all that comfortable, while the DS' triggers are springier and generally more comfortable to use. The PSP features the better face buttons as they're bigger and feel more like a regular controller. The DS' face buttons are rather small. Deciding the better D-Pad is sort of a toss-up as it probably comes down to a matter of taste. Both are good, however.

When it comes down to it, the PSP features a much more standardized input system with its analog stick, though the DS allows for much greater creative design with its touch screen. Really, it's a matter of the select game at hand that decides which system has the better controls, and though the PSP will win for most mass-market games, the Nintendo DS has plenty of room for innovative control methods. But when it comes down to it, the PSP is much better suited for 99% of the games on the market.

Winner: PSP

(Load Times)

Like the battery life, the Nintendo DS has the huge advantage when it comes to load times. Being that the DS uses EEPROM cartridges, which are nearly identical to that of a memory card, it's able to load data much, much faster than the PSP's UMD drive. Gamers who are used to immediately jumping into a portable game may not feel at home with the PSP's load times, which like its hardware, very much mirror that of its PS2 counterpart.

Winner: Nintendo DS

(Portability)
By portability, we're referring to how easy it is to throw the system into your pocket or backpack and stroll off without worry of damage to the system. In this regard, the Nintendo DS' flip design takes the cake. When closed, all of the DS' important parts are enclosed and safe from bruises, bumps and scratches. The PSP, on the other hand, requires that you slip it into some sort of case in order to protect its screen. No matter how good the screen looks out of the box, it'll look like crap very quickly if you don't take care of it to protect it from scratches.

Size-wise, the difference between the two systems is rather negligible. When closed, the DS is a little taller and wider than the PSP, though the PSP is a little longer. In any direction the difference is no more than about an inch, which given the size of the systems isn't very much. Either system will fit in your pocket, though not very comfortably unless it's a very large pocket. Weight is also a non-issue with either system.

When it comes down to it, the DS is more portable in and of itself. The PSP requires some sort of casing, and even though the PSP Value Pack comes with a pretty nice slip cloth, it won't protect it a whole lot from things slamming up against it. The DS seems like it would naturally hold up better to bumps and bruises. Granted, you can outfit the PSP with a nice metal case that should protect it from anything, but the same could be said about practically any device.

Winner: Nintendo DS

(Media)

The Nintendo DS uses Game Cards, capable of storing up to 128MB of data as of now, though larger chips could theoretically be used to increase that size at some point in the future. Cost and whatnot obviously plays a factor there. The DS is also capable of playing Game Boy Advance games, so that's worth mentioning here.

The PSP uses UMD discs, capable of holding up to 1.8GB of data. While it can't write to those discs for saves, the PSP also makes use of Memory Stick Duos for saves and media. Memory Stick Duo media is currently available in 1GB versions with 2GB versions on the very near horizon.

Really, the only thing in the DS' favor when it comes to media is its faster read speeds, which as mentioned earlier is a pretty big difference. However, the PSP is capable of much more with its media ports. With its UMD discs, games can be exponentially larger than those on the DS. Large games with tons of art may be plentiful on the system, as could cutscenes. Using a Memory Stick Duo, gamers can easily trade save files either by swapping cards or copying their saves to their PCs via the PSP's USB port. Add in the ability to copy audio and movies to the system and you have a much more robust media setup.

Winner: PSP

Wireless

The fully-fleshed-out capabilities of both systems really have yet to be seen. It was recently announced at this year's Game Developer's Conference that the Nintendo DS will soon have full online support for multiplayer via its wireless connection, putting it on par with the PSP's wireless capabilities. The PSP has supported games on the shelf as of this writing, while the DS does not. Still, they're on the way and at this point it's hard to say which system will make better use of it. And actually, it'll almost certainly be up to the developer on that end, so this is really a tie.

Winner: Tie

Final Word

If you add up the tallies, it comes out to Nintendo DS: 3, PSP: 3, Tie: 2, or an overall tie. But that doesn't really tell the whole story. If you look at the category winners, the PSP takes the system power, control and media categories while the Nintendo DS takes battery life, portability and load times.

So in theory, the Nintendo DS is a better portable system but the PSP is the better all-around system. This seems like a fair enough assessment and the final word we'll stick with.

Hacker attacks silence Twitter, slow Facebook

SAN FRANCISCO - Twitter and Facebook said they suffered service problems from hacker attacks on Thursday, raising speculation of a coordinated campaign against the world's most popular online social networks.

Twitter, the popular micro-blogging service, was knocked down by a malicious attack that prevented people from accessing its website for several hours on Thursday.

Facebook members saw delays logging in and posting to their online profiles, which the social networking site said was related to an "apparent distributed denial of service attack."

Facebook was working with Twitter and Internet search company Google Inc to investigate further, said a person familiar with Facebook but who was not authorized to speak to the press.

Speculation swirled on the Internet that other social networking sites had also come under attack, after relatively lesser-known site LiveJournal said it too had been targeted by hackers on Thursday. But those rumors could not be confirmed.

The incidents follow a wave of similar cyber attacks in July that disrupted access to several high-profile U.S. and South Korean websites, including the White House site. South Korea's spy agency said at the time that North Korea might have been behind the attacks.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said on Twitter's blog that the site was the victim of a denial-of-service attack, a technique in which hackers overwhelm a website's servers with communications requests.

"We are defending against this attack now and will continue to update our status blog as we continue to defend and later investigate," Stone wrote.

A separate Twitter status Web page said later on Thursday that the site was back up, but that Twitter was continuing to recover from the attack.

Google said in an emailed statement that it was in contact with some non-Google sites that were impacted by Thursday's attacks to help investigate.

"Google systems prevented substantive impact to our services," the statement said.

ANTISOCIAL ATTACKS

Motives for denial-of-service attacks range from political to rabble-rousing to extortion, with criminal groups increasingly threatening to hobble popular websites that don't pay demanded fees, according to security experts.

Twitter's newfound fame makes it an easy target for hackers, said Steve Gibson, the president of Internet security research firm Gibson Research Corp.

Twitter, which lets users publish short, 140-character messages to groups of online "followers," is one of the fastest-growing Internet companies.

The number of worldwide unique visitors to the Twitter website reached 44.5 million in June, up 15-fold year-over- year, according to comScore data.

Security experts said a single group could have been behind the problems on Twitter, Facebook and the other sites as hackers evolve their ability to attack multiple sites at once.

"History would tell us that it's probably the same attacker or group of attackers that is launching both attacks," said Kevin Prince, the chief technology officer of security services provider Perimeter eSecurity.

A representative for blogging website LiveJournal said the site was also affected by a cyber attack for about one hour on Thursday morning.

While the company "can't be 100 percent sure that it was the same attacks as on Twitter, Facebook, et al, it would be a huge coincidence if they aren't tied to one another," said LiveJournal representative Tim Smith.

A denial-of-service attack on Twitter would be particularly effective since "it's going to be very visible to a huge population of people who have now, to some degree, become dependent on this next-generation, real-time service," said Gibson.

Some Twitter users appeared to be taking the incident in stride.

"It's just an annoyance. Remember Twitter was down in 2007 and 2008 all the time," said Robert Scobble, a commentator on the technology industry who boasts 93,000 "followers" on Twitter, referring to a period when Twitter's rapid traffic growth occasionally led to several service disruptions.

For lawyer Zabi Nowald, it was just another day -- Twitter or no Twitter -- as he headed to work in downtown Los Angeles with a laptop in one hand and a Blackberry in the other.

"None of my friends do Twitter; none of my employers do," said Nowald, 27. "It affects my life zero. I lost something I never had."

Filipinos bid farewell to democracy icon Aquino

MANILA, Philippines – Former Philippine President Corazon "Cory" Aquino was laid to rest Wednesday next to her assassinated husband after a funeral procession joined by hundreds of thousands of supporters who hailed her as an exemplar of moral leadership.

About 600 priests and nuns linked arms around the Aquino mausoleum at the Manila Memorial Park to keep back the crowd who followed the flatbed truck with her flag-draped coffin on its final, nine-hour journey through the rain-soaked streets of the capital.

The procession went from the Manila Cathedral on a 14-mile (22-kilometer) route jammed with Filipinos dressed in yellow _ the signature color of the 1986 prodemocracy uprising led by Aquino that toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Many in the crowds flashed the "L" sign for "laban," or fight, in Filipino _ an anti-dictatorship slogan _ and chanted "Cory."

Aquino was buried Wednesday evening inside a simple white-painted tomb next to her husband, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., the opposition leader whose mantle she reluctantly took on after his 1983 assassination when he returned from exile in the U.S. to run against Marcos.

Despite a patchy record during her six years in office as the 11th president of the Philippines, she remained a beloved figure. She died on Saturday after a yearlong battle with colon cancer. Her passing prompted an immense outpouring of grief.

"Nobody can replace her," said real estate agent Jessa Roche, 31, who recalled how as a child her parents had taken her to the "people power" demonstrations that transformed the Philippine politics after two decades of authoritarian rule.

"She taught us to pray and fight for our democracy. If a tyrant will return, there will be millions of Corys who will stand up. She left a good example and the next generation should continue that legacy," she said.

Former presidents Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada, the latter deposed in a second popular uprising in 2001 on corruption allegations, attended Wednesday's requiem Mass. They were joined by East Timor President Jose Ramos-Horta.

"I think the greatest tribute that Filipinos can pay to Corazon Aquino and so many others who gave their lives for democracy is ... there should be no more dictatorships again," said Ramos-Horta. Aquino inspired East Timor's struggle for independence from Indonesia a decade ago, he said.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who was at odds with Aquino after she called for Arroyo to resign because of vote-rigging allegations, paid a quick visit to the wake Wednesday morning upon her return from an official trip to the U.S. and left before the church ceremonies and procession.

The Aquino family rejected offers by Arroyo for a state funeral, but the armed forces gave full military honors.

At the burial, weeping family members, including Aquino's grandchildren and sons-in-law, lined up to kiss the former president's remains in the open casket.

Senior officers then carried the casket and placed it inside the tomb while honor guards fired a 21-gun salute before playing "Taps."

Relatives, friends, supporters and military commanders placed yellow roses inside the tomb before it was sealed. The crowd sang the patriotic song "Bayan Ko (My Country)," which was popular during the anti-Marcos struggle.

Earlier, in a tearful message of thanks to the multitudes of mourners, Aquino's youngest daughter Kris said, "You have given our family honor beyond anything we could ever have hoped to receive."

"No matter how great the sacrifices of my parents, I can honestly say to all of you that for my family, the Filipinos are worth it."

During her time in office, Aquino faced down seven coup attempts, mostly by officers who had pushed for Marcos' ouster and felt they had not been given their share of power.

While she brought political change, Aquino struggled to meet high public expectations. Her land redistribution program fell short of ending economic domination by the landed elite, including her family. Her leadership, especially in social and economic reform, was often indecisive, leaving many of her closest allies disillusioned by the end of her term.

Aquino stepped down in 1992, refusing to seek another term and reminding people that her mission _ the restoration of democracy _ had been completed.

Outpouring of support for Cory a reminder for Arroyo to behave, says Binay

The outpouring of public support for the late former President Corazon Aquino is a warning sign for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her allies not to ram Charter change down Filipinos' throats, United Opposition (Uno) president and Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay said Wednesday.

But a Palace official saw it differently, saying Mrs. Aquino's death as a call for national unity and that the administration is willing to reconcile with its political foes.

Binay, a close friend and ally of Mrs. Aquino, said the show of people power at Mrs. Aquino's "people's funeral" signifies that the people are capable of staging a political upheaval if Mrs. Arroyo insists on clinging to power beyond 2010.

"Cory’s death has awakened the people. She has bridged the generation that took part in EDSA 1 with the younger generation who are now aware that the freedom they enjoy was earned through struggle against a dictatorship," he said in an article posted on the Makati City Web portal.

"I am certain that if Mrs. Arroyo pushes through with her selfish agenda, the spirit of Cory Aquino will rally the people," he added.

Binay said that during the Marcos regime in 1986, Mrs. Aquino stood up against the martial law regime, fought for clean and honest elections.

After EDSA-1 toppled the dictatorship, Mrs. Aquino stood for morality and transparency in government when she became president, he added.

In 2005, Mrs. Aquino openly called for the resignation of Mrs. Arroyo over the “Hello Garci" scandal involving alleged fraud in the 2004 presidential elections. She also led protest actions against the declaration of a state of emergency in January 2006 and the NBN-ZTE scandal in early 2008.

"The younger generation got a crash course in contemporary history. In a span of four days, they learned how difficult life was under a dictatorship, and how our freedom was earned with the sacrifice of so many lives, among them Cory’s husband Ninoy Aquino," Binay said.

"By her example, Cory showed the people the importance of standing up against an oppressive, corrupt and power hungry regime. She showed us that even as a private citizen, we can and should stand up for what is right," he added.

Call for unity

In Malacañang, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said the death of Mrs. Aquino should be a signal for all Filipinos to unite and set aside political agenda.

A Palace statement said Remonde called for unity, which he said could ease the political tension especially considering that the 2010 elections is just around the corner.

Less political tension according to him would allow Mrs. Arroyo to finish her programs in energy, education and environment before her term ends next year, he added.

He described the predawn visit of Mrs. Arroyo to the wake of Mrs. Aquino as "a triumph of goodwill against ill-will."

The Aquino family has turned down the Arroyo administration’s offer to give Mrs. Aquino a state funeral, saying they were more comfortable with a private funeral.

Nonetheless, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) accorded the former president all the necessary honors as mandated by law.
